Is Summer the Best Time to Learn What You Want in Your Next Yacht?

Hey, me again—Broker Bob from Yacht Partners! 🚤⛵

As I write this, it's the middle of July here in Lefkada.

The marina is buzzing. Charter yachts are changing over, owners are returning from days spent exploring the Ionian, and visitors are strolling the pontoons, dreaming about which boat might one day be theirs.

People often ask me if things quieten down during the summer.

I can honestly say...nope.

It's busy, it's varied, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

One thing I notice every summer is that owners return from a cruising talking about what they loved... and, without even realising it, what they'd change.

And that's exactly why I think summer is the best time to learn what you want in your next yacht.

You Notice the Little Things

It's funny how quickly you discover what really matters.

Not when you're walking around a boat show.

Not when you're scrolling through listings online.

But when you're actually living onboard.

Maybe you realise you'd love a little more shade in the cockpit during the hottest part of the day.

Perhaps you're constantly wishing for an extra fridge because the drinks never seem to stay cold.

Maybe you've discovered that a passerelle would make life much easier when stern-to in a busy harbour.

Or perhaps you've simply decided you'd like one extra cabin because the grandchildren keep asking to come along!

These aren't complaints.

They're discoveries.

Every Cruise Teaches You Something

One of my favourite conversations at the end of the season starts with:

"Bob... we've been thinking."

Not because something has gone wrong.

Quite the opposite.

They've had such a fantastic summer that they now know exactly how they'd like to spend the next one.

Sometimes it's practical.

"Next time we'd definitely want a bow thruster."

Sometimes it's about comfort.

"Air conditioning would've made those really hot afternoons a lot nicer."

Sometimes it's about the type of boating they've discovered they enjoy.

"We thought we'd sail everywhere... but actually we spent most afternoons at anchor swimming."

There's no right or wrong answer.

Every season teaches you something new.

The Perfect Boat Doesn't Exist...

...but the perfect boat for you probably does.

After helping people buy and sell yachts for years, one thing has become very clear to me.

The biggest upgrade isn't always a bigger boat.

Sometimes it's a better layout.

Sometimes it's easier access around the deck.

Sometimes it's more natural light in the saloon.

And sometimes it's simply a boat that suits the way you actually use it.

That's why I always encourage people not to compare yachts based purely on specifications.

Think about your own experiences.

How do you spend your days onboard?

What makes life easier?

What could make those perfect summer evenings even better?

Those answers are often far more valuable than another page of technical specifications.

It's Not About Selling Boats. It's About Finding the Right One.

One thing I always try to remind clients is that our job isn't simply to sell the boats we happen to have listed.

It's to help you find the right boat.

Sometimes that's already in our portfolio.

Sometimes it's with another broker.

Sometimes it hasn't officially reached the market yet.

Either way, that's where relationships and networks become just as important as listings.

Don't Forget...

While you're discovering what you'd change on your next yacht, it's worth remembering something else.

The yacht you're enjoying today could already be someone else's perfect next yacht.

Over the years, I've learnt that there really is no such thing as the "perfect" boat.

There's only the perfect boat for a particular owner.

One family dreams of an extra cabin for the grandchildren.

Another couple is looking to downsize to something that's easier to handle.

Some buyers want to cross oceans.

Others simply want to spend relaxed weekends cruising the Ionian.

Every owner has different priorities, and every buyer is searching for something slightly different.

That's why I've always believed yacht brokerage isn't simply about selling boats.

It's about finding the right match.

So while you're making notes about what you'd love on your next yacht, remember that someone else could be making exactly the same list... and your current boat might just tick every single box.

That's one of the things I enjoy most about this job.

Bringing together the right people and the right boats at exactly the right time.

If this summer has got you thinking about your next chapter—whether that's buying, selling, or simply exploring what's possible - I'd love to hear your story.
